Labour Friends of Morocco Launched to Strengthen UK-Morocco Relations and Foster Bilateral Collaboration

Labour parliamentarians and councillors have today launched Labour Friends of Morocco (LFM), a new group designed to deepen the relationship between the Labour Party, the Moroccan community in the UK, and the Kingdom of Morocco.

The initiative is committed to fostering lasting partnerships, grounded in shared values and meaningful collaboration. At its core, LFM will advocate for the strengthening of diplomatic, economic, cultural, and educational ties between the two Kingdoms. By promoting closer cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, technology, agriculture, and tourism, LFM aims to unlock new opportunities for trade and investment, job creation, and shared prosperity, benefiting both the UK and Morocco.

With trade between the UK and Morocco reaching £3.8 billion in 2024, there is substantial potential to deepen economic engagement, especially in high-growth sectors such as renewable energy, technology, and tourism. The group is also committed to advancing social cohesion and global leadership on issues such as climate change, green technology, and sustainability, reflecting the shared commitments of the UK and Morocco to address the world’s pressing challenges.

Joe Powell, MP for Kensington and Bayswater and Chair of LFM, launched the group in Westminster at an event attended by His Excellency Hakim Hajoui, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UK, alongside Labour MPs and Councillors.

Joe Powell, Chair of LFM, said: “I am honoured to Chair Labour Friends of Morocco group. Kensington and Bayswater is home to one of the largest Moroccan communities in the UK, and I am immensely proud to represent it. I look forward to working closely with colleagues across Parliament to strengthen ties between the UK and Morocco, champion the contributions of British-Moroccans, and provide a forum for discussing issues relevant to the community.”

His Excellency Hakim Hajoui welcomed the launch of LFM, stating: “Morocco and the UK share a historic partnership that has consistently gone from strength to strength. Yet, there remains significant potential to elevate this relationship to even greater heights. It is truly encouraging to see alliances like Labour Friends of Morocco being forged today, as they will play a vital role in unlocking economic opportunities and fostering ever-closer cultural and educational links.”

He added: “The Moroccan community in the UK serves as a vital bridge between our nations, strengthening our ties and promoting a deeper mutual understanding. Their contributions are invaluable to advancing this shared vision of prosperity and collaboration.”
